Updated Century Schoolhouse on over 4 Acres
MLS#: 40248769
Seize this extraordinary opportunity to own the home of renowned Leishman Pottery. Historically operated as the Cains Corners Schoolhouse for 55 years (1913-1968) this lovingly renovated double-brick wonder sits on 4.14 landscaped and partially forested acres. “Built in 1913” only tells part of the schoolhouse story. According to the book, Sunnidale Looks at Yesterday, A History of Sunnidale Township, the first school in the vicinity was built on the other (south) side of Sunnidale Concession 9 in 1874. By 1912, that school was in need of repair and the trustees decided to build on a larger piece of property across the road. As a result, they built the brick school that still stands there today. It was known as the Cains Corners Schoolhouse for 55 years (1913-1968) then operated as a residence and business from 1978 to 2022. The Leishmans renovated the property and raised their daughters in the Schoolhouse and as artists and entrepreneurs, the large basement with walkout has served as the Leishmans’ year-round pottery studio, with plenty of room for shelving, tables, kilns and tons of natural light. Leishman Pottery added its landmark retail space in 1994-1995, with inside entry to a garage.
With 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a huge basement workshop and a fully insulated addition (1995) with an attached garage, the property is perfect for your relaxed and creative lifestyle. Spread your wings here with 2,413 sq. feet of harmonious living space, including the 751 sq. ft addition. Upstairs find an additional 160 sq ft in the storage loft/play area. The basement provides an additional 1,320 sq ft with a laundry area, artist studio (has worked perfectly for pottery production) and workshop. Porthole windows cast a gentle glow on the area where thousands of pieces of Leishman Pottery were created and a walk out leads to the great outdoors.
For outdoor living, enjoy the large screened-in sunroom, snowshoe, ski or stroll past the pond and towering stand of pines on your private trail or relax on the stone patio beside the herb garden.
Inside, original touches retaining the schoolhouse character include beautiful birdseye maple floors flowing throughout the main floor, light fixtures and gorgeous woodwork. The kitchen with custom tile backsplash, cherry counters and eat-in dining is truly the heart of this home. Huge windows with original transoms are proportionate to the grand spaces with 12’ 9” ceilings. The 2 pc bathroom near the hall has a cherry countertop, custom tile border and handmade ceramic sink. The main floor also features a spacious primary bedroom, with dual closets flanking a showstopping window overlooking a serene, pastoral setting. The 2nd and 3rd main floor bedrooms are also spacious and bright. The main 4 pc bathroom is outfitted with a custom ceramic sink, border and tub surround, cherry countertop and handmade tile floor. This property has been a beacon of friendship in the community, has been recently updated with many newer windows, maintained with care and is ready for new owners.
